Review: M Social Singapore (ft. alcove and loft rooms!)

M Social Singapore is a lifestyle boutique hotel in the Robertson Quay area along the Singapore River. It is unique for its alcove and loft-style rooms designed by the renowned French designer Philippe Starck (whose contributions also include the JW Marriott Singapore). Since its opening in 2016, the hotel has attracted a youthful clientele with its chic interior design and tasteful decor.

The area is home to several other hotels including the InterContinental Robertson Quay, Grand Copthorne Waterfront, Four Points by Sheraton Riverview which are all within 300 metres of the M Social Singapore. The nearest MRT stations are Fort Canning (DT20) and Clarke Quay (NE5) which are about a kilometre away. Bringing increased connectivity to the area will be a new station, Havelock (TE16), which will open in 2022 as part of stage 3 of the Thomson-East Coast Line project.

Dining options are plenty in this area, with its numerous restaurants and bars lined along the Singapore River that can get busy in the evenings. The hotel does have its own restaurant, Beast & Butterflies, which is open to all and offers all-day dining with both indoor and outdoor seating options.

The 10-storey hotel offers the following room types:

  • Alcove Cosy room (19 sqm)
  • Alcove Terrace room (19 sqm + 4 sqm terrace)
  • Loft Gallery room (22 sqm)
  • Loft Premier room (22 sqm)
  • Left Terrace room (22 sqm + 4 sqm terrace)
Of the 293 rooms, there are only 80 Loft rooms (36 Loft Gallery, 36 Loft Premier rooms, and 8 Loft Terrace), so advance bookings are advised especially during peak season.

The entry-level Alcove Cosy room features a queen-sized bed and a 4-metre pitched ceiling. Concrete walls and metallic finishing brings a modern and artistic sense to the interior.

In ordinary times, the hotel offers experiential activities such as cocktail-making and perfume-making workshops. The former is currently offered in-room—a set of spirits, mixers, an ice bucket, instruction sheet, and a complimentary cobbler shaker affords guests the opportunity to concoct their own creations.

The outdoor pool on level 5 features a glass edge (not pictured) that overlooks the Singapore River. On the other side is the much taller—and somewhat imposing—Four Points by Sheraton Riverview; note that their guests do have a clear view of M Social's swimming pool.

A small fitness centre is located on the same floor which offers dumbbells, a weights machine, and treadmills.

M Social is part of Millennium Hotels (as is the M Hotel, Studio M, and Copthorne King's Hotel). The hotel chain offers a My Millennium loyalty programme that allows guests to enjoy member rates and earn points. Unlike other loyalty programmes like Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors, My Millennium is a single-tier programme without the complexities of elite tiers and qualifying nights. Singaporean guests can also redeem their SingapoRediscovers Voucher (SRV) for staycations through appointed travel agents.

Trendy and youthful, M Social Singapore offers a refreshing lifestyle experience in hotel-level comfort. It is located at 90 Robertson Quay, 238259 Singapore.
