As the most global brand in Marriott's portfolio, the Sheraton name is well-known among travellers with over 400 properties globally. The one in Singapore is located near the Newton MRT station (north-south and downtown lines), not far away from the Newton Food Centre, and about a kilometre away from the Orchard Road shopping district. It comprises of 420 guest rooms across 21 floors. It is one of the more affordable properties among Marriott's hotels in Singapore, perhaps in recognition of its age, but as with other Sheratons around the world it still delivers a sense of timeless style and comfort.

First impressions
The building looks dark from the outside, but as guests enters the hotel, they will be greeted by an expansive lobby with a water installation in its centre, and the hotel's main restaurant (named "The Dining Room") on the opposite. The edge of the restaurant is bounded by tall glass panels that look into the outdoor waterfall and landscape, offering a good amount of natural light and a sense of proximity to nature. It's a nice comforting ambience that may draw some comparisons with the nearby Shangri-La Hotel Singapore. It also reminds me somewhat of the Paradise Garden Buffet at the Flamingo Las Vegas, but without the flamingos.

Immediately to the left of the hotel entrance is a grand staircase (many classic-style hotels tend to have them, including the Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur) which leads to the meeting spaces on the second floor. The hotel offers 13,670 square feet of meeting space, with its renovated Grand Ballroom capable of accommodating up to 600 guests in theatre style and 400 in banquet.

The carpets in the common areas come in pastel shades which perhaps adds on to the garden/nature feel of the hotel.

Rooms come with a slightly protruding balcony area, which I thought was a nice spot to read a book.

The lights, air-conditioning and "do not disturb" signs can all be controlled using a bedside device.

The bathroom is a pretty classic one, and its sink has separate taps for warm and cold water. Bath amenities are supplied by Le Grand Bain (translates to “the great bath” in French), which promises - and perhaps over-delivers on - an invigorating citron scent.

Dining
The Executive Lounge has a cocktail hour between 5.30pm and 7.30pm; it currently offers one bento box (not too impressive) and free flow alcoholic drinks. At present, breakfast is only served in The Dining Room.

Apart from The Dining Room mentioned earlier, the hotel has two other restaurants, namely Li Bai Cantonese Restaurant, and Maetomo Restaurant & Bar. There are also bars in the lobby and pool area.

The outdoor pool is located on the 5th floor, which is also where the terrace/pool/cabana rooms are located. The fitness centre overlooks into the pool.

Overall thoughts
It's not particularly fancy, and loses out slightly considering the "right above Orchard" appeal of the Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza, but this hotel gets the job done and it's perhaps worth a staycation run for loyalty members when rates are low (it's a category 5 property and probably better to use cash) or to expend some SingapoRediscover vouchers.
