Review: Sheraton Petaling Jaya Hotel, Malaysia (Executive Suite & Club Lounge)

Sheraton, as the most global brand within Marriott's portfolio, had a new logo unveiled in March 2019 to depict its transformation towards a revitalised vision. For such an iconic brand with a long history dating back to 1933, this certainly marks a resurgence, modernisation and a reimagination of the Sheraton experience. It was around the time of this transformation that Sheraton Petaling Jaya Hotel opened its doors in October 2017.

It is arguably among the top hotels in Malaysia's Petaling Jaya financial district, which is a 20 minute drive away from the Kuala Lumpur city centre, and 45 minutes from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Other than 221 rooms and 32 suites, the 5-star property also houses 14 meeting rooms, including a 1,500 square metre Grand Ballroom, positioning itself as a outstanding venue for meetings and functions. Locally, the hotel is known at the place where the "Sheraton Move" occurred, which led to the fall of the ruling Pakatan Harapan government.

Check In

While the hotel entrance is on the ground floor, the actual hotel lobby is on the third. While the staff offered the option to check in at the club lounge, I reckoned that I would just opt for the standard check-in to get the keys quickly and take a rest. On the elevator I noticed an interesting floor configuration - above the lobby was level 3A (dining), 3B, 3C (meeting rooms) and 3D (Grand Ballroom and meeting rooms). I did not find a level 4, and my guess it that this is perhaps attributable to tetraphobia.

I had the privilege of staying at the beautifully appointed Executive Suite on a high floor. I traversed the hallway as my suite was located at the corner, which meant more peace and privacy.

The Executive Suite

The Executive Suite has an impressive 76 square metres of space, with a decor that seemed to suggest a kind of classic timeless feeling. It has a very timeless Sheraton feel to it. The living area was decorated with paintings and an executive-looking work desk. There were two 50-inch LED televisions, one in the living area and another in the bedroom. In the bedroom was a king-sized Sheraton sleep experience bed, with mattress from Simmons.

The suite has a small toilet near the entrance, and a main marble bathroom. The bathroom was oversized and connects to the dressing area via a wooden door. There was also a small television screen by the bathtub, which was a nice addition although guests may also watch the bedroom television through the glass panel by not drawing the blinds.

A view of the city skyline was available; the expressway and railway track can be seen from where I stayed but it never got noisy from the suite.

Sheraton Club Lounge

The highlight of the stay was, in my opinion, the Sheraton Club Lounge located on level 31. It spanned a vast 300 square metres of space, with a wide variety of seating options and great views of the city. Check in and check out were also available at the lounge.

The evening cocktail hour from 6pm and 8pm was well-timed and appeared to accommodate well to the needs of business travellers. It also affords guests with the opportunity to view the sunset from the comfort of the seat, and within reach from a selection of alcoholic drinks and hors d'oeuvres. The selection was definitely one of the best among the hotels that I have stayed in Malaysia. Particularly delightful was the satay (skewered chicken sticks), as can be seen from how quickly they were taken up after each replenishment. This was definitely the highlight of my stay.

A live station featuring the traditional Kueh Pie Tee was also available during the evening of my visit. The variety of options meant that I had no difficulty filling up a couple of plates.

Fitness Centre and Pool

Fitness facilities were available two floors up on level 33, with a fitness centre featuring high ceilings and a swimming pool for guests.

The pool area also has a bar next to it. The rooftop bar is named Sala and offers signature cocktails and small bites.

Breakfast at Feast Restaurant

Breakfast was available at Feast, which is the hotel's all day international restaurant. The spread of items was more than decent. Interestingly. guests will enjoy the option of Japanese items such as Chawanmushi (steamed savoury egg custard) and grilled mackerel fish. For lunch and dinner, the hotel also has a Chinese restaurant serving Cantonese dishes (Yue) and a Japanese restaurant offering teppanyaki, sushi and sashimi (Miyabi).

Impression: A enjoyable stay with an exceptional Club Lounge

Overall, the hotel provided a great stay overall with no major problems experienced. While the area surrounding the hotel was not particularly interesting, the Club Lounge more than made up for it; it was unusually large for the hotel's capacity of 253 rooms and suites, and had a classy and elegant vibe. Also appreciated were the very local traditional snacks as welcome gifts, which felt much more personalised and tailored to the hotel's location than the typical fruit basket, as foreign guests will especially appreciate a taste of the local heritage. A small laundry credit was also offered as part of elite benefits, which was a nice gesture.
